Hinamatsuri Festival 2026

Hinamatsuri Festival 2026 delivers a vibrant and cultural celebration of Japan’s cherished Girls’ Day tradition. Every spring — centred on March 3 — cities and towns across Japan come alive with displays of beautifully dressed hina dolls (雛人形), representing Japan’s historical imperial court. For travellers seeking an authentic seasonal experience, the Hina Meguri in Akizuki offers one of the most unique and picturesque celebrations in Kyushu.

A Town Steeped in Tradition

Nestled in Asakura City, Fukuoka Prefecture, Akizuki is affectionately known as the “Little Kyoto of Chikuzen” for its beautifully preserved castle town streets and traditional heritage. During the Hinamatsuri Festival 2026, the town transforms into a haven for hina doll admirers and cultural explorers alike.

The Stunning Outdoor Doll Display

From February 14 (Saturday) to March 8 (Sunday) 2026, Akizuki hosts the Akizuki Hina Meguri (雛めぐり). One of the standout attractions is the outdoor display of around 600 Hina dolls arranged on the 21 stone steps in front of the Nagayamon Gate (長屋門) within the Akizuki Castle ruins. On select days — weekends, public holidays, and March 3 — these vibrant figures grace the red-carpeted steps from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM, creating a dazzling tableau against the castle’s historic backdrop.

Note: In case of rain, the outdoor exhibition may be cancelled, but a special indoor display will be held at the Former Tonami Family Residence so visitors can still enjoy the dolls.

Hands-On Activities & Events

This year’s festival goes beyond passive viewing! Visitors can take part in:

  • Hina Doll Arrangement Experience: From 9:30 AM, before many displays open, guests are welcome to help arrange some of the dolls — a delightful cultural experience.

  • Quiz Rally & Workshops: Explore Akizuki by answering questions in a themed quiz rally and join fun workshops that introduce more about hina traditions and local culture.

Akizuki’s Hina Meguri also showcases doll displays throughout the town’s historic streets and shops on weekdays, offering travellers a chance to discover hidden hina scenes while strolling quaint neighbourhoods.

What is Hina Matsuri? A Quick Guide

Hina Matsuri — also called Girl’s Day or Doll Festival — falls on March 3 each year and celebrates the health, happiness, and prosperity of young girls. Central to the tradition is the display of ornamental dolls dressed in Heian-period court costumes, often set on tiered platforms draped in red cloth. Families display heirloom doll sets inside their homes, while cities and towns host public exhibitions and events.

Across Japan in 2026, numerous regions are celebrating with hina festivals and displays — from museum exhibitions in eastern Japan to street-wide doll routes in Akita — making early March an ideal time to experience a living tradition that bridges artistry and community spirit.
