Hi, I’m David Hogan Jr. — a Malaysian writer and photographer with a lifelong connection to Japan.

My journey with Japan began in the early 1990s, when I had the unique opportunity to live and work there. What started as a chapter in my career quickly grew into a deep and lasting passion. Since then, I’ve returned almost every few years, and now, post-pandemic, I find myself coming back annually to reconnect with the country that continues to inspire me.

Through Lifestyle Japan, I share my perspective as an outsider who has come to know Japan’s culture, rhythm, and hidden corners intimately. Whether it’s capturing the quiet beauty of a Kyoto morning, discovering a tiny sushi shop in Osaka, or sharing tips on navigating Japan’s incredible train system, my goal is to offer honest, practical, and visually rich stories for travellers who want to go beyond the guidebooks.
