Kimono Converse Shoes From Kyoto
Kimono Converse Shoes From Kyoto
Japan-exclusive Converse sneakers have long been a bit of a secret among sneaker fans, and here is something out of this world for sneaker fans, introducing the Kimino Converse Shoes from Kyoto.
Unlike in many other countries where Nike manages Converse, the brand is independently operated in Japan by ITOCHU Corporation, and many shoppers swear that Japanese Converse models offer better materials, unique designs, and more comfortable construction. Now, there’s a bigger reason to shop for Converse in Japan.
A brand-new collaboration between Converse and Kyoto-based fabric workshop Kyoto Ippuya has created a collection that blends traditional Japanese textile craftsmanship with one of the world’s most recognisable sneakers. The result? A limited-edition lineup of “kimon”-style” Conv” rse shoes that may just become one of Kyoto’s fashion souvenirs this year.
Located near Kiyomizu-dera, Kyoto Ippuya is known for producing handcrafted accessories using traditional fabrics such as chirimen crepe and Kyo-Yuzen-dyed textiles, both deeply tied to Kyoto’s textile-making heritage. According to ABC-MAABC-MART’s press release, the collaboration launched nationwide on April 23, 2026, and is available exclusively at ABC-MART stores across Japan and online. Buyers also receive a limited-edition postcard set while stocks last.

1) ALL STAR KY HI / IPPUYA – 16,500 yen
This is arguably the standout piece in the collection. The upper uses traditional Kyo-Yuzen dyeing techniques, one of Kyoto’s famous textile arts, often used for premium kimonos. The process involves intricate hand-dyeing, outlining with resist paste, and steaming to create delicate patterns inspired by nature.
The result is a pair of high-top sneakers that feels more like wearable art than everyday footwear.
Other unique details include:
- Ippuya branding on the heel
- A special woven tag showing the fabric was dyed in Kyoto
- A rare ankle patch featuring “Conve” se All Star” writ” en in katakana
This pair feels especially fitting if you’re in Kyoto’s districts, such as Gion or Higashiyama.

2) ALL STAR WF HI / IPPUYA – 14,300 yen
Not all kimono fabrics need subtle colours. This high-top model uses textured chirimen crepe fabric featuring a bold camellia flower pattern printed in Kyoto. It’s playful and very different from standard Converse designs you’ll see overseas. The katakana ankle patch also appears here, making it one of the most uniquely “Japan” only” Converse” releases in recent memory.

3) ALL STAR WF OX (Dark Green) – 13,200 yen
Prefer low-cut sneakers? This dark green version features elegant chrysanthemum patterns printed onto Kyoto-made crepe fabric. It’s one of the most wearable designs in the collection — traditional enough to feel distinctly Japanese, but subtle enough for everyday outfits. And yes, it would probably turn a few heads as you walk through Fushimi Inari Taisha.

4) ALL STAR WF OX (Light Green) – 13,200 yen
This may be the prettiest pair in the lineup. Soft pink cherry blossoms bloom across a pale green base, giving the sneakers a very spring-in-Japan aesthetic. If maiko in Gion ever swapped their wooden sandals for sneakers, these might be their pick.
Where to Buy These Converse Shoes in Kyoto
ABC-MART says the collection is available at stores nationwide, but if you’re shopping in Kyoto, these are the most convenient branches for travellers:
- ABC-MART Grand Stage Kyoto Porta – Located inside Kyoto Porta underground mall near Kyoto Station. This is one of the easiest branches to visit right after arriving in Kyoto.
- ABC-MART Grand Stage AEON Mall Kyoto – Just a short walk from Kyoto Station’s Hachijo Exit. This branch often carries a wider selection and is tax-free for tourists.
- ABC-MART Kyoto Shijo Kawaramachi – Located in Kyoto’s busiest shopping district near Kyoto-kawaramachi Station — perfect if you’re already exploring downtown Kyoto.
- ABC-MART Kyoto Teramachi – A convenient stop if you’re shopping around Teramachi and Shinkyogoku Shopping Streets.
Tip: Stock may vary by location, especially since this collaboration has been getting attention on Japanese social media and sneaker pages. If you have a specific design in mind, it’s worth checking with staff before making a trip.
Why These Might Be a Better Souvenir Than Typical Sneakers
Many tourists head straight to Onitsuka Tiger stores, looking for the famous yellow sneakers popularised by Kill Bill: Volume 1. But these Kyoto-exclusive Converse feel far more special. They combine traditional craftsmanship, wearable fashion, and a genuine Kyoto story — all in something you’ll actually use after your trip.
Instead of buying another box of matcha snacks or keychains, these sneakers let you bring a piece of Kyoto’s textile heritage home with you. And honestly? That sounds like a far better souvenir.
